Camera Op on Netflix Doc
One of the best things about this job is getting a call on a Sunday night asking if you’d be able to jump in on camera operating for a Saudi Netflix Documentary on the following Tuesday. Umm, yes?! ‘Seen’ is a Saudi docu-series exploring innovative solutions to societal issues from around the world. I admit I was a little nervous in joining this crew, who then turned out to be some of the warmest and nicest people I’ve ever worked with. The few days filming were completely bonkers, and took us all over London, shooting in the London Transport museum, in a laughing yoga class, an Asda supermarket and just off Trafalgar Square where the host Ahmed invited members of the public to try camel milk.
It was very run-and-gun style shooting, reacting to the host with little to no planning or rehearsal. I had to quickly adapt to this way of shooting and once adjusted really enjoyed the teamwork involved - working like this means you need to be hyper aware of your crew and it quickly brought us together. Another favourite part of filmmaking - feeling like you belong to a new family in one day! I only have three pictures as the series won’t be released until the end of the year: Mo the directer with camel milk, the camel milk, and me in the transport museum after hours.
